SEGRO colleagues dedicate ‘Day of Giving’ to support local communities

This year, SEGRO selected 11 projects spread across Thames Valley, Greater London and the Midlands.

SEGRO owns and manages more than 800 industrial units leased to almost 600 customers across these areas, including at Slough Trading Estate, Park Royal and SEGRO Park Coventry.

Over 60% of all UK employees got involved demonstrating that ‘giving back’ is very much part of our culture as employees can see the positive impact their volunteering efforts can have on the lives of the local community,

Highlights of the activities that took place include:

Slough / Thames Valley 

Wexham Park Hospital, Slough

• Wexham Park Hospital is a large NHS hospital that serves the communities in Berkshire and south Buckinghamshire. Activities on the day included working in the two of the smaller gardens in the hospital grounds used by patients and staff, pruning and reducing some of the larger plants, tidying main central planting areas, sweeping and removing moss from block paving and painting the walls of its newly landscaped Anniversary garden.

Salt Hill Park Stream, Slough

• This project involved rubbish removal, vegetation management and bank repairs to help maintain a wetland sanctuary for people and wildlife.

DASH, Slough

• The DASH Charity supports the victims of domestic abuse and runs three refugees for women across Berkshire, which provide sanctuary for victims that have nowhere else to go. Colleagues helped to create a more welcoming environment by painting the kitchen, staircase and landing of a safe-house in Langley. Colleagues also assisted with creating sweetie cones that will be sold at DASH awareness events and fundraising opportunities.

Recycled Teenagers, Slough

• Recycled Teenagers is a charity run by volunteers with the aim of helping the elderly with their physical, emotional and mental health needs. SEGRO colleagues joined a coffee morning at the Britwell Centre – chatting with the group and helping to organise bingo and a raffle with some prizes donated by SEGRO.

Thames Valley Adventure Playground, Taplow

• Thames Valley Adventure Playground first opened its doors in 1982 and provides a safe and enjoyable play space dedicated to adults and children with special needs. Over the last year, 15,000 visits were made to the park.
• The specialist indoor and outdoor play areas provide unique support to its users, siblings, families and carers, including respite and advisory services. The ‘teenage’ area was allocated to SEGRO for the day – this included renovating a wooden climbing frame, gardening and jet washing the rest of the area. Colleagues also refreshed a mural wall to make space for the teenagers to show their creative flair.

Crown Meadow, Colnbrook

• Crown Meadow forms part of the Colne Valley Regional Park and provides an important nature and relaxation area for Colnbrook residents. As a corporate member of the park, SEGRO employees helped to clear the cleared vegetation to create a pathway to a pond, collected litter and rubbish and weeded the play area.

Ealing / Brent

City Harvest, Acton Park

• Every week, City Harvest rescues over 80 tonnes of surplus food, enough for 1.1 million meals, and provide it, free of change, to over 350 charity organisations. Colleagues got involved in a variety of activities including unloading deliveries, checking and sorting food, creating mixed meal and snack boxes, and carrying out other warehouse tasks to help in the day-to-day running of the charity. SEGRO has been supporting City Harvest since it first moved to Acton Park in 2017.

Canal and River Trust, Park Royal

• The Canal and River Trust works with volunteers and communities across England and Wales to transform canals and rivers into spaces where local people want to spend time. Colleagues picked up litter and cleaned up towpaths at Grand Union Canal, helping to protect the wildlife and biodiversity as well as improving the area for local people to enjoy.

Coventry

Trinity Lodge Dementia Care Home, Coventry

• Trinity Lodge Dementia Care Home is a provider of care for elderly people, along with offering support for older people who have residential and dementia care needs. The garden at the care home needed improving, so that it can be used by residents as a respite area and can take part in activities like potting and planting.

North London

Canal and River Trust, Enfield

• The Canal and River Trust works with volunteers and communities across England and Wales to transform canals and rivers into spaces where local people want to spend time. Colleagues helped the charity tackle litter and did some painting to give the area a tidy up for local people to enjoy. They also undertook light vegetation work to help protect wildlife and local biodiversity.

East London

Fight for Peace, Newham

• Fight for Peace is dedicated to supporting young people to reach their full potential through integrated programmes of support and inclusion. The charity is present in 17 countries worldwide, has trained over 120 youth-focused organisations in its methodology to date and since 2000 has supported over 250,000 young people. Activities on the day included painting a large external wall at the charity’s academy, along with helping to make an inventory of a big shipment of sports clothing that had been delivered for the young people.

SEGRO’s ‘Day of Giving’ was set up in 2016 and employees across all its locations in the UK and Continental Europe are encouraged to take part. So far this year, 254 SEGRO volunteers across the Group have participated in the Day of Giving, representing 60% of total employees.
