On Thursday 22 March 2018, 80 people split into 9 teams from a range of local businesses took part in the ETA, Estate Trail App, the first of its kind digital treasure trail using mobile app technology to gain a unique insight into the history and heritage of the Slough Trading Estate.

Teams fielded from 20 businesses, including Mars, Hanovia, CLEAN, Telephonica, Slough Council and the Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce downloaded a mobile app which when scanned over the check points across 11 locations on the estate, showed an insight into the associated stop. For example, the check point outside the AP Films business showed moving images of Thunderbirds. At each stop, there was a local actor who helped tell the story of each checkpoint while engaging each team.

Neil Impiazzi, Partnership Development Director, SEGRO, said:

“Using digital technology in this engaging way to celebrate the rich heritage of the Slough Trading Estate and the inventive and cutting edge work taking place there today is an initiative we are proud to support. The event brought together a wide range of customers and stakeholders from across Slough for a stimulating and enjoyable afternoon. The Slough Trading Estate is an integral part of Slough and we are pleased to be able to offer an opportunity to explore its history in this unique way.”

The teams battled against the clock and each other to solve the clues at the check points in order to win prizes for their nominated charities.

The winners were CLEAN and were awarded their prize by Tan Dhesi, Slough MP, who said:

“Well done to everyone who took part in today’s challenge at the Slough Trading Estate. The ETA has been a great way to tell the historical and cultural story of Slough while working to break down negative stereotypes of Slough and show people how great of a place Slough is to work and live in.”

CLEAN, Winners of the ETA, said:

“We had a great day exploring the rich culture and heritage of Slough while participating in the ETA. We are so proud to have won the event and be able to give £500 to Aik Saath, a local charity in Slough committed to working with people from all communities, faiths and backgrounds to promote and encourage conflict resolution and community cohesion through training, campaigns and projects. ”

Members of the public can now scan lampposts across the Estate using a developed app and QR scanner entitled “Zappar” to reveal more historical information about Slough.

In 2017, SEGRO, owner of the Slough Trading Estate, judged an Arts Council competition offering a grant to Slough based companies using digital technology to connect people to the heritage of the Slough Trading Estate. Resource Productions, a social enterprise production company in Slough, were chosen to execute the idea of an interactive ‘game’ to engage with the local workforce, increase awareness and cultural and social heritage of Slough.
